Mexico Undocumented Migration Drops 86 Percent After Trump’s Return

(MENAFN) Unauthorized border crossings through Mexico have plummeted by as much as 86% during certain months this year when measured against equivalent timeframes in 2024, new government statistics reveal.

The dramatic collapse in undocumented migration comes as US President Donald Trump begins his second White House tenure with an aggressively restrictive immigration platform, simultaneously demanding neighboring nations stem the flow of migrants heading north.

Data published by Mexico's National Immigration Institute (INM) documents that authorities registered or apprehended 135,233 irregular migrants from January through September—a staggering decline from the 1,005,321 undocumented individuals recorded during the identical nine-month window in 2024.

The steepest monthly downturn occurred in May, when INM documented merely 5,128 migrant encounters—a stark contrast to the 125,499 undocumented crossings logged in May 2024.

Venezuelan, Honduran, and Colombian nationals represented the predominant share of those detained and processed. Male migrants constituted 68.9% of all individuals moving through Mexican territory.

Following Trump's January 20 inauguration, his hardline immigration policies immediately impacted Mexico. Reports indicate he pressed Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to suppress migration flows or confront tariffs targeting Mexican goods.

Immigration enforcement statistics from INM suggest Mexico's government has largely accommodated American pressure.

The southeastern region bordering Guatemala saw the heaviest enforcement activity in 2025. Chiapas recorded 31,472 apprehensions—representing 23.3% of nationwide detentions. Tabasco led all states with 76,136 detentions, accounting for 56.3% of the total.
