Mexico handovers twenty-six prisoners to US due to security concerns

(MENAFN) Mexico has transferred 26 inmates to the United States to prevent them from continuing to control drug cartel operations from inside prisons, authorities announced at a press briefing on Wednesday. The handover included key figures from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel, two of the country’s most powerful criminal organizations.

Mexican Security Minister Omar Garcia Harfuch said the government acted in line with a request from US President Donald Trump. “These high-profile criminals who, even while deprived of their freedom, continued to direct illicit activities through visits -- visits that cannot be prohibited out of respect for their human rights. However, these interactions were being used to maintain criminal operations, threaten officials and expand networks of corruption and intimidation, which posed an unacceptable risk to security,” he explained.

Harfuch also noted that many of the extradited leaders had received favorable rulings from judges, allowing reduced sentences and transfers to low-security facilities. He emphasized that Mexico itself stands to gain the most from the extraditions.

Prosecutor Alejandro Gertz Manero added that the 26 inmates join 29 others extradited in January under previous formal requests from the US. When asked if further transfers of high-profile criminals are planned, Manero said, “Every time that happens, we’re going to do it,” noting that extraditions would continue as long as formal US requests are made. He also confirmed that US prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty for these inmates, as capital punishment is prohibited under Mexican law.
